Breakbot’s Be Mine Tonight has a real feel of the film ‘Saturday Night Fever.’ Not just because of the dance floor and epic moves, but the tune is Bee Gees-meets-everything 70’s-disco. Although through the rhythm there’s a mellower voice; Delafleur – who’s hushed sound is full of dance temptation.
The music video, directed by Gary Levesque and produced by some seriously talented animators, has a feel of 2D animation merged with the comic style of manga’s facial expressions and general cuteness, whilst also having an overall psychedelic immersion. Using such fashionable-funk, the music video tells a tale most of us can only wish for – turning from being shy, awkward and nervous to owning the room as the dance floor becomes your best friend. At first though, the teenage heroine apprehensively enters the arcade, watching as everyone intensely plays their games, and as such are ignoring each other. But to the side of the room is a dusty old machine – yes it’s a dance station, and once the coin goes in the girl finds her own inner “dance-goddess,” who transports her into knowing not just all the leg struts and jumps, but actually, actually doing the arm movements as well – something I never saw anyone accomplish, and neither have the arcade’s customers who stop to marvel at the dance sensation.
It’s strangely weird to hear the retro tune and matching atmospherics put into a 21st century scene – am I really so old that the arcade games of the early 2000’s have become dust-buckets? It seems so. However, Breakbot’s beats will have me grabbing my arthritic legs, and moving my chicken-wing arms in no time.
Be Mine Tonight is a vibrantly aesthetic song, well-matched by its music video, which makes perfect sense seeing as Breakbot (stage name for Thibaut Berland) graduated in 3D Animation. His creativity later extending into the realm of music, where in the mid-00s he first threw his name into the ring of inventive DJ/producers with his distinctive remixes. From this he released his debut album By Your Side 2012, with a range of his collaborative songs being with the talented artist Irfane. Including hit song Baby I’m Your’s, their partnership having long since continued.
All that’s left now is to sit back and relax, as the electric-dance beats of Breakbot slide under your feet in one foul swoop, leaving you with no choice but to party in disco-heaven.
