Kaiit: Miss Shiney (2019 – single)

An endless source of energy can be found in the colourful sounds of Kaiit and no matter your mood there’s no way your feelings won’t be lifted up by her voice, so be warned if your happy already, you’ll be grooving on the ceiling – but only with the coolest of dances moves, for Kaiit’s soulful seduction demands it.

Behind the soft prism beginnings of Miss Shiney, lies an intricate image of artistic measure. At first blurred, the camera slowly widens-out to show Kaiit as she sits on various thrones composed of surrealist dreams that make a real-life accounting of “Where’s Wally?” So much so that you’ll find yourself hitting pause every two seconds in an effort to see it all. Directed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, the frozen images are arranged in a beautiful and unique assortment; piles of sofas positioned like a comfortable, but drunk game of Tetris, a flower-covered car that harks to summer, and a bed left discarded in a leaf-covered pond. All the while people are composed around Kaiit, and like musical statues stay perfectly still as she sings. But once the music ends they’re unfrozen from their postures, while Kaiit becomes frozen in hers.

Aside from disturbing mannequins, the video is utter artwork, much like the opening painting of Kaiit, while the studio around her lays surrounded in creativity and inspiration.

“Put your thoughts into the universe
And she gon’ bring it right back
You’re so hard on yourself
Mama you don’t need that
No you your biggest critic girl”

In Miss Shiney Kaiit sings about the damage of self-doubt, of not believing in what you can do, and getting swept up in the pressure of succeeding, and yet, her track is proof of what you can achieve if you have the confidence to create. It’s very fitting then, that in the first collective scene everyone’s holding a CD – which is what at first blinds you with their reflected sunbeams – a metaphor maybe that in focusing so hard that you don’t see the success? But in the end the proof is in the pudding – the upbeat-laden track showing Kaiit has achieved pure gold. Not only this but everyone around is also holding a CD, to later holding a flower and finally a piece of a puzzle?? Possibly telling of how everyone has a chance for success and creativity within them, if only they give themselves a break. But what about the rubber ducks? I think they’re just fun!

Tying my hands to the keyboard is the only way to ensure I’ll finish this review, Kaiit’s music making me want to hit the streets, stroll along a beach (even if it’s a good 800 miles away) and to just chill out with friends in the sun. The artist’s music fast becoming a loved habit, and one I’ll not give up without a fight.
