Lyric videos have existed in some format or another since music videos first began, it’s only in recent years that we’ve seen an explosion of them, with CeeLo Green’s F*ck You often credited as the founding father of their usage – by creating a separate appeal for them. Since then, these videos are commonly used to build-up a song’s popularity (prior its release), or to generate a lot of buzz in social media. Increasingly however, they can be just as good, if not better than the “official music video”. But how do you go about making a lyric video stand out from the rest? Factor In embraces a 70s vibe, with honey-mustard tones and split-screen perspectives, that for all appearances are filmed in varying millimetre formats, which are then arranged like a film’s contact sheet – producing a mix of polaroid meets retro filming. Each of the image’s “stills” being cinematically arranged to be just as beautiful as the lyrics, while Garrett’s subtle slump of the shoulders, downcast eyes and hands held together, show the emotional weariness of pulling away from a relationship.
