Bomba Estéreo: Internacionales (2017 – Ayo)

Internacionales has me rethinking my travel plans. Why fly when roller skates will get you there faster and cheaper? Why pack trainers – roller skates look a lot cooler. Why take anything – the roller skates will provide. I need a pair of 1980s’ roller skates now!! Okay, maybe not quite the meaning of this fun video (directed by Torben Kjelstrup) for Colombian artistic duo Bomba Estéreo are passing along the message of unity, a celebration of cultures and the power of music to cross the world.

In the video, a travel agent suddenly takes her own advice and goes off to see the world, learning lots about other countries, embracing the differences, seeing the similarities and becoming an anime – because why the hell not. The chorus holding the line; “Dance! Dance! You don’t need a language to dancetalking about the universalness of our connections – in particular how music can pass through the world’s different barriers, such as language. With Bomba Estéreo singing in Spanish, but the essence of their songs translating to all.

In Internacionales Bomba Estéreo also sing about the unity of Latin Americans, which was particularly poignant at the time of Trump being in power. I am a Colombian/I am an American /I am a citizen of the world/I am a Mexican/I am Dominican”. It feels as though Bomba Estéreo are saying celebrate and embrace who you are, and to do so in others, much like their viral hit; Soy Yo, which in the video shows a girl loving who she is.

Internacionales is a positive message that avoids ramming anything home, except that dance and music is one of the things that unite us. And so like the travel lady; lean back, pull a pose and enjoy the dance tunes of Bomba Estéreo.
