Okay, so not the “traditional” music video or song, but what the hell! Feminist Pirate Chantey is a bloody fantastic musical skit from the comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. These pirates having never been so politically-correct, and with this helpful and instructional video you too can learn to say ‘yo ho’ but not ‘ho’ – “cos ho is disrespectful yo.” Hmmm, maybe Santa ought to be sent this video too?
From the hit comedy series by Key and Peele, this music video/skit is one of many comedy gems by the pair, and with such imaginative wit it’s no surprise that the two have continued to have success individually as well. Peele has since written and directed hit films; Get Out and Us, which has a frightening and insightful viewpoint on modern American life, while Key has continued his comedy status, and acting talent in such roles as Jerry from Dolemite Is My Name, whilst also having the side job of being Barrack Obama’s anger translator.
At three minutes fifty seconds, this feminist chantey flies by, and certainly another verse/limerick wouldn’t have gone a miss. But Key and Peele have played it safe in keeping it short and sweet, much like the rest of their skits. However, with a collection of fifty-five episodes there’s plenty more to delve into, though the rest isn’t so musically inspired, but their commitment, writing and set designs, are just as on par.
With the world being such a crazy place, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele brilliantly provide snippets of medicine for your brain. Its political satire, general wit and unpredictable scenes making you crave more, and with some of their characters returning for more antics and mayhem you may get exactly what you wished for, and then some.
