Orla Gartland: I Go Crazy (2018 – Single)

I Go Crazy has photo-montages a plenty that may just trigger a creative, but unusual effects on your perception of the world, so watch out – for once you enter the mad-hatter’s brain you might not want to ever enter normality again. This artistic video directed by Guy Larsen will linger long in the mind, not only for its clever interpretation of the lyrics – of a mind being pulled apart as they wait to hear how their partner feels about them – but for its insightful use of a neutral background that makes the stylistic imagery so effective; especially the fraying edges where the paper has ripped – showing the hurt within a person, to the multitude of thoughts going through their mind.

In choosing to keep the colours simple, the video doesn’t distract from Gartland’s pure notes and catchy lyrics; “Three words, two hearts, one maybe/Say something before I go crazy now,” – telling of the desperate wait to know how someone feels when you’ve said I love you. Do they feel the same? Have your feelings sent them away? Or are you the only one who’s in the relationship – hence the one heart? The inventive video rendering a mind that’s tortured and alone as they wait for a reply. Gartland’s conveyance of a mind stressed, insecure, and dejected – can be heard in the lyrics, each word sang with complete and utter emotion. Its empathetic and relatable. While in using a collection of self-portraits built upon one another, the video tells of how she’s left to spin round and round within her mind as she feels it fall apart.

There’s also a sense of the college years in this pop-inducing song, enough that you’ll be restringing your guitar, and dusting off your drums so you can join in with Gartland. The artist’s music having a natural tone to it. One that fully embraces the soul of acoustic music, her Irish accent adding a soft lilt to her melody. Debuting in 2012 with Devil On My Shoulder, Gartland has continued to release a steady stream of music that puts the lyrics at the forefront. Her solid voice, and indie-folk beat clear to hear; balancing between being a soothing remedy to heartbreak, to a light indie-rock.
