Samm Henshaw: Broke (2018 – single)

The bass, the brass instruments, and a warm-honeydew voice that’s intoxicating, what more could good music need? Great lyrics – triple check. Samm Henshaw’s songs are honest, funny at times, thought-provoking, and have the ability of resonating with you, especially Broke. What could be more fitting than the line “I’m starting out my seventh day of sofa surfing” – the lyric video happily accentuating on this; its look like the mindset (and flat) of any procrastinator out there. Looking at you students – my ex-dorm room looking like it’s been reconstructed for the video, just maybe with a few less dirty dishes piled up.

The words for Broke however appear to be about trying harder in a relationship in order to keep it;

“I can stop procrastinating, oh
Be a little more prepared
Show you that I care”

And that he only has himself to blame; “But look around and see no one to blame”. But still, in order to win them back, his making all these vague promises if/maybe about changing. The choice of such non-committal words showing the effort to be put in e.g. very little.

In the chorus Samm Henshaw asks “If I wasn’t broke/Would you spend more time with me like you said you’d do?…”Wondering if he had money would things be different. But the money aspect seems to really be about trying harder and at the end of the video, he’s not succeeded in changing at all, if anything the room is worse. Oddly and maybe fittingly are the crutches that appear – they’re not needed, not used, but it’s there as an excuse.

Compulsive in its tempo, Samm Henshaw’s engaging voice blends fittingly into the mix and adds the cream and cherry to the top. A natural-born musician, he understands the music inside out and it – which shows in producing flawless tracks after flawless tracks.
