Here come the flood of memories in this sunlit video of childhood nostalgia. The music video for Shaayad staring a young girl as she cycles down the country roads (presumably near her home town) to have amazing adventures in the countryside. Armed with bucket loads of courage she navigates her way along, and even manages to get her bike out into the middle of the lake. I so want to be her when I grow up. But maybe like the music video you had a yellow bike, personally mine was purple, you might have even had a ukulele, or maybe a playmobil “boombox”. Either way you probably felt just as cool as the girl in Taba Chake’s video Shaayad (I sure wasn’t though). Especially as she travels the surrounding landscape, going further afield unafraid in her exploration of it.
Growing up with a myriad of music inspirations, it’s no surprise Taba Chake has instilled a sense of storytelling to his work, one that’s as soothing as it is pleasing to listen to. His songs performed in English, Hindi and Nyishi (a Tibetan-Burman language). The lyrics for Shaayad appearing in part to lean on Taba Chake’s journey as a musician – there’s a sense of freedom, discovery, risks and joys, all of which happen in our exploration of who we are and in carving a path through life. It’s quite deep.
The music video for Shaayad is directed by Ramuna Pun, its cinematic imagery paying tribute to the wilderness of nature, and to the joys of growing up surrounded in wildlife. Its serene beauty firmly implanted in the mind, and if not, like the little girl she’s taking the forest with her in her travels. Maybe Shaayad is Taba Chake’s homage to taking a little bit of home with you, wherever you go.
A fingerpicking-guitarist, Taba Chake’s accompaniment suitably fits the melody of his songs about love and nature. The tune being chirpy, and yet created with a built-in peace that exudes from his guitar-playing hands, as much as from his gentle and enticing voice.
