Tahiti 80: Hurts (2018 – The Sunshine Beat Vol. 1)

Tahiti 80 have done it again, they’ve made something that’s sad be utterly gorgeous to listen to, and with director Khamkwan’s spellbinding video it’s impossible not to watch. All I want to do now is pack my bags, get on a long-haul flight (yes I’m that serious) and watch sunsets, while having a single teardrop suddenly appear as I listen to Hurts on repeat – its beauty demanding it.

Behind the delicious temptation of its melody is the painful tale of a break-up, and in particular asking their ex to leave them alone, so that they too can move on. The video to Hurts only exuding this further as we’re introduced to our heroine – she works hard, is saving to get by, and is possibly travelling, but then she meets her charismatic lover – run, run now! Initially he makes everything feel easy and we watch as the two fall head over heels for each other. That is until she finds he’s taken everything from her – except maybe the memories of when it was better. But as her mind replays them, her eyes slowly become cold.

I need to watch this video again; damn his smile, damn her beautiful smile back, why do I love such a heart-breaking video? Is it because, like the song, they take charge at the end – they tell the person to leave, that they’ll survive, that they’ll both survive. “Time to move on, pack your stuff/And run away.”

But I don’t want to move on. Thankfully however, Tahiti 80 (named after a T-shirt) have been going for a few decades now, so there’s plenty more songs to have your heartbroken to. Formed in the 1990s in France, the six-member group have travelled the world performing indie-rock-wonder-pieces, sure to be devoured in seconds and leaving fans always eager for more – especially their delectable acoustic pieces.
